Who needs a residence permit?

Nationals of non-EEA countries

Nationals of non-EEA countries must apply for residence permits to study in Sweden for more than three months. You can apply for a permit at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country when you are admitted to full time accredited university studies in Sweden.

To be sure of obtaining your permit in time you should submit your application three months prior to your departure for Sweden.

 

Information for Canada, Japan, Turkey an the United States

This information concerns citizens of Canada, Japan, Turkey and the United States who are planning to study for a Master’s degree (120 credits) at a university in Sweden. :

Nationals of the EEA and Switzerland

Nationals of Members States of the EEA (EEA: Member States of the EU and Norway, Iceland and, Liechtenstein) and Switzerland do not require residence permits to study in Sweden. However, you must register with the Migration Board no later than three months after entering the country.

Nordic citizens may spend time in and live in Sweden without needing to register or hold a residence permit.
