The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) was founded as recently as in 1977. But its roots may be traced back more than two centuries, to the first steps taken in Sweden to establish higher education and research in agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine. These largely private initiatives were taken in the mid-18th century.
Under its mission statement, SLU ‘develops the understanding and sustainable use of biological natural resources through research, teaching and environmental monitoring.
SLU’s research includes projects of all sizes, ranging from climate change and rural development to Functional Genomics and Biotechnology. Human and animal health and welfare, biodiversity and food production are just a few current research fields of importance. SLU has a long tradition of basic research combined with problem-oriented, applied research concerning food, livestock, forestry and both urban and rural development.
SLU has four main campuses located at: Alnarp, Skara, Uppsala and Umeå. Research and teaching activities are carried out throughout the country. SLU offers Master's programmes at Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
