On 1 January 2010 the University of Kalmar and Växjö University merged to form Linnaeus University. This new university is the product of a will to improve the quality, enhance the appeal and boost the development potential of teaching and research, at the same time as it plays a prominent role in working closely together with local society. Linnaeus University offers an attractive knowledge environment characterised by high quality and a competitive portfolio of skills. Linnaeus University is a fully integrated, dual-campus university. About 1 500 students from more than 40 countries come to study in Växjö and Kalmar each year.
Kalmar, a small to medium-size town, is an ideal setting for student life. It is attractive and conveniently laid out, with a colorful history and castle dating back to medieval times, proximity to the sea, undulating farmlands and deep forests. The School of Natural Sciences in Kalmar has special competence in the area of life, health and the environment and is recognized for excellence in teaching and research across a range of natural sciences and related disciplines. The School offers master’s programmes which equip the graduate for work in industry or future studies towards a PhD.
Växjö is renowned for its comprehensive and attractive campus, a creative area where students’ study and leisure needs are met close at hand. Here you find the School of Computer Science, Physics and Mathematics. The location is superb: close to unspoilt countryside, yet only three kilometres from the city centre. The city of Växjö has 80,000 inhabitants and is centrally located in the south of Sweden, with excellent communications. Växjö is surrounded by lakes and forests, and everything is within cycling distance.
