Education system

Higher education in Sweden is divided into three cycles: first cycle (Bachelor programmes), second cycle (Master’s programmes), and third cycle (Doctoral studies). The Swedish credit system with higher education credits (HEC, in Swedish: högskolepoäng or hp) is compatible with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), so that 30 hp equals one term. This website focuses on the second cycle and Master’s programmes.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees apply for students from outside the EEA and Switzerland who start their Master’s studies in Sweden from autumn semester 2011. Tuition fees vary from one university to another and from one field to another. See further information on the universities web pages.

Higher education is free of charge for Swedes and as a member of the European Union, the rules for Swedes also apply to citizens of other EU or EEA countries, and Switzerland. Exchange students are also exempt from fees, as their studies are reglated by agreements between Swedish and foreign universities.

There are also certain rules that apply if you already have a resident permit from within the EU:
