Educational methods

Sweden has one of the most ambitious educational evaluation programmes in Europe. The aim is to maintain the country’s reputation for investigative research and independent thinking.

The culture at Swedish higher education institutions is informal, creative and student-centred. Teaching is problem based and carried out in different forms: lectures, seminars, group work, laboratory work, independent study, etc.

Much work is left to your own initiative. Such a system, with its lack of rigid scheduling, is often demanding. It encourages you to develop a critical attitude and an independent approach — two highly sought-after attributes in today’s knowledge-based employment market.

One common educational method is group work, where you work together in a team to solve a problem. Working in groups will help you develop good communication skills and become a successful team player. An important quality in whatever carrier you are aiming at.

Language courses

The universities often offer Swedish language courses for master students. There are however often a limited number of seats available at these courses. Be quick to contact the department when you have been admitted to a programme and let them know that you are interested.

Student services

When you have been admitted to a Master’s programme you will get a contact person from the department of your studies. This person will probably be able to answer a lot of your questions concerning your studies. However, many of your questions might not be related to your studies and then it can be wise to contact the Student Union at the university.

The Student Unions are responsible for the welfare of the students by dealing with educational, financial, health care, housing and recreational matters etc. In some university towns there are also other student organizations.
