Lund University is one of Sweden’s strongest research universities, and has in recent years been awarded more research funding than any other Swedish higher education institution. These successes can largely be attributed to the interdisciplinary research that is carried out and the diversity that a full-scale university can offer.
Most of the research can be grouped into several overarching areas addressing the challenges facing humanity; life sciences, health and ageing, complex systems, climate, the environment, energy and economics, advanced materials, economic social and political systems, and human development. At the eight faculties there are more than 550 professors and 2,300 research students.
The education is closely linked to current research. The expertise of the teaching staff is high and most of the teaching staff combine teaching and research. For those who wish to deepen their knowledge, there are good opportunities to go on to research studies.
Lund University offers a broad range of education within engineering, science, law, social sciences, economics, medicine, humanities, theology and the fine arts. There is something for every student among the 315 study programmes and more than 1,600 stand-alone courses. The possibilities for putting together a personalised programme of study are almost endless.
The university was founded in 1666 and is closely associated with the city of Lund. More than half of the around 110,000 inhabitants have links to the University, which is situated right in the heart of Lund. This gives the whole city centre a sense of vibrancy. The large number of students gives Lund a youthful character and contributes to the city’s rich café culture, nightlife and ‘spex’ amateur theatre tradition. For a number of years, Lund has been voted Sweden’s most popular student city.
