Umeå University has a strong international and multicultural presence, with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. Our main campus – with its 33,500 students and over 4,000 employees – is alive with enthusiasm, creativity and fresh ideas.
The Faculty of Science and Technology offers a wide range of courses and programmes in English, and actively strives to update the curriculum in line with progress within research areas and with developments in the job market. The world-class achievements at our research centres with staff of various nationalities and the connection with industry lead to an interdisciplinary and international approach in our academic programmes. Proximity to research and good pedagogy are hallmarks of the faculty’s education.
In order to compete and excel in the national and international arenas, there is a sharp focus on four strong research environments: biological chemistry, ecosystem dynamics, mathematical education and plant and forest biotechnology. Prominent research is also conducted in the areas of applied IT, sustainable development and physics. The applied research very often develops in close collaboration with industries such as the forestry industry and the chemical technology industry in Northern Sweden, as well as IT companies such as Tieto Enator, IBM and Microsoft.
The departments under the faculty carry out both research and education in the areas of chemistry, physics, biology, computing science, mathematics, electronics, teacher training, architecture and industrial design.
